The Vickers F.B.14 was a British two-seater biplane that was to be used as an armed reconnaissance aircraft, but lacked the appropriate engine.
Development and design:
At the beginning of 1916 Vickers Limited began to develop a two-seater biplane which was to be designed as a reconnaissance aircraft but could also be used as a fighter pilot.
During the development, the design engineers were directed towards the new 230 hp BHP in-line engine, later referred to as the Siddeley Puma. Accordingly, the fuselage and its steel tubes were mounted in such a way that they could later accommodate the engine.
In the middle of 1916 the first prototype was finished, at this time the BHP engine was still in development and was not yet available for the installation. Instead, a 160 hp Beardmore engine was used, but it was prone to errors and was only intended as a temporary solution.
Since the delivery of the BHP engine was further delayed in the course of production, 50 aircraft without engines were delivered to the Royal Flying Corps for the time being. In order to be able to use the airplanes nevertheless, finally the Beardmore engine with 120 HP was inserted. During the first test flights it quickly became apparent that the power of the engine was not sufficient for the aircraft, so further engines were tested, which led to different variants of the F.B.14. The 160 hp Beardmore engine proved to be the most suitable engine, although the desired performance of the aircraft could not be achieved.
At this time the Bristol F.2B was already in use, which was much more powerful than the Vickers F.B.14. For this reason only 100 Vickers F.B.14 were built and development was discontinued.
Use in the First World War:
Due to the limited operational possibilities of the airplane only a few were sent to the front in Mesopotamia or served in the homeland defense in Great Britain.
On 22 July 1917 in Orfordness, an aircraft was also used for experiments with a new rifle scope.

World War One Aircraft Carrier Pioneer: The Story and Diaries of Captain JM McCleery RNAS/RAF
Jack McCleery was born in Belfast in 1898, the son of a mill owning family. He joined the RNAS in 1916 as a Probationary Flight Officer. During the next ten months he completed his training at Crystal Palace, Eastchurch, Cranwell, Frieston, Calshot and Isle of Grain, flying more than a dozen landplanes, seaplanes and flying boats, gaining his wings as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant. In July 1917 he was posted to the newly commissioning aircraft carrier HMS Furious, which would be based at Scapa Flow and Rosyth. He served in this ship until February 1919, flying Short 184 seaplanes and then Sopwith 1½ Strutters off the deck. He also flew a large number of other types during this time from shore stations at Turnhouse, East Fortune and Donibristle.
He served with important and well-known naval airmen including Dunning, Rutland (of Jutland) and Bell Davies VC. He witnessed Dunning’s first successful landing on a carrier flying a Sopwith Pup in 1917 and his tragic death a few days later. He also witnessed the Tondern raid in 1918, the world’s first carrier strike mission. He took part in more than a dozen sweeps into the North Sea by elements of the Grand Fleet and Battle Cruiser Fleet. He carried out reconnaissance missions off the coast of Denmark, landing in the sea to be picked up by waiting destroyers. He witnessed the surrender of the High Seas Fleet. Promoted to Captain, he acted as temporary CO of F Squadron for a time postwar.
