Bristol T.B.8

The Bristol T.B.8 was developed by the Romanian chief designer of the company Bristol Airplane Company and was used mainly as a training aircraft, but also partly as a bomber in the First World War.

 

Development and construction:

The Romanian chief designer Henri Coandă has already developed the Bristol Coanda monoplane for the company Bristol Airplane Company.

This monoplane also served as the basis for the construction of a biplane, which should meet the requirements of the British Admiralty for a corresponding aircraft after.

The single-engine, two-seat Bristol T.B.8 had an aerodynamic and slim hull, the prototype was still equipped with wing dislocations, which was later replaced by ailerons in the later production. The first flight of the prototype took place on August 12, 1913.

One of the prototypes was equipped with suspensions for bombs. This aircraft was exhibited at the Paris Salon de l'Aéronautique and presented to the public. Following this, both the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps placed orders with the company.

In addition to newly built aircraft also existing Bristol Coanda monoplane were rebuilt here.

Use in the First World War:

When World War I broke out, the Royal Flying Corps's Bristol T.B.8 aircraft were delivered to the Royal Naval Air Service. These had three newly built and bring the three aircraft shown at the Paris exhibition to France.

On November 25, 1914, the first and only bombing of a T.B.8 took place on a German position at Middelkerke in Belgium. Since the aircraft were already too slow and were considered outdated, all six were brought back to the UK and served there for training until 1916.

Some of the aircraft were also sold to Romania and served in the local air force.

World War One Aircraft Carrier Pioneer: The Story and Diaries of Captain JM McCleery RNAS/RAF Hardcover – June 13, 2011

Jack McCleery was born in Belfast in 1898, the son of a mill owning family. He joined the RNAS in 1916 as a Probationary Flight Officer. During the next ten months he completed his training at Crystal Palace, Eastchurch, Cranwell, Frieston, Calshot and Isle of Grain, flying more than a dozen landplanes, seaplanes and flying boats, gaining his wings as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant. In July 1917 he was posted to the newly commissioning aircraft carrier HMS Furious, which would be based at Scapa Flow and Rosyth. He served in this ship until February 1919, flying Short 184 seaplanes and then Sopwith 1½ Strutters off the deck. He also flew a large number of other types during this time from shore stations at Turnhouse, East Fortune and Donibristle.

He served with important and well-known naval airmen including Dunning, Rutland (of Jutland) and Bell Davies VC. He witnessed Dunning’s first successful landing on a carrier flying a Sopwith Pup in 1917 and his tragic death a few days later. He also witnessed the Tondern raid in 1918, the world’s first carrier strike mission. He took part in more than a dozen sweeps into the North Sea by elements of the Grand Fleet and Battle Cruiser Fleet. He carried out reconnaissance missions off the coast of Denmark, landing in the sea to be picked up by waiting destroyers. He witnessed the surrender of the High Seas Fleet. Promoted to Captain, he acted as temporary CO of F Squadron for a time postwar.
